World Water Day: Online Quiz-Takers Unlock $80,000 Donation For Charity:water

This article is more than 4 years old.

As much of the world shelters at home looking to the internet for comfort, taking a quick online quiz from charity:water on World Water Day (March 22) will bring clean water to one person in need.

According to the nonprofit, 40% of the world’s population lacks access to hand-washing facilities. In sub-Saharan Africa, that number is as high as 75% — troubling figures in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

To help raise awareness of these and other stunning facts about the lack of access to clean water, charity:water launched a six-question multiple-choice quiz. For each of the first 2,000 people to take the quiz and provide their email address, an anonymous donor has pledged to donate $40 — enough to provide one person with access to clean water.

“This World Water Day lands at a time when access to clean water is more important than ever. In the face of this global pandemic, hand washing is one of the primary ways to save lives. Unfortunately, there are 785 million people at a greater risk because they lack access to clean water and sanitation,” said charity:water CEO Scott Harrison. “This World Water Day, we wanted to raise awareness for this urgent global issue while also offering a simple way to make an impact for people in need. Thanks to a generous donor, our World Water Day quiz gives people the opportunity to unlock a donation that will bring clean and safe water to one person, while learning about the many ways safe water, sanitation, and hygiene impact lives around the world.”

In addition to the quiz, charity:water has also produced a full set of digital assets for use across social media channels. The organization says it has helped more than 11.1 million people in 28 countries secure access to clean water since it was founded in 2006.
