A Jakob Nielsen study once found that 90% of online community users are lurkers (read or observe without contributing) with only 9% of users contributing ‘a little’ and 1% actively contributing. I find that people have responded to this and that comment threads generally stay constructive as a result. Be humble.

I was unable to get statistics for “lurkers&# , but I am sure it is high. This was accomplished by having a well defined and reinforced social media policy as well as fostering constructive conversations in their community arenas. Here are a few statistics I received from a Salesforce community manager: 233,330 registered users.
