When I was at my old company I had a large outsourced team based in the Philippines. Yammer: We’re just deploying Yammer at New Marketing Labs but it is being used to keep our team connected so that we’re not constantly interrupting each other and so that we can stay in contact when we’re traveling.

Before wikis were used by the Intelligence Community to develop reports on IEDs , people were creating user badges to show off their favorite NFL teams. Before my own company's Intranet won any awards , we had people talking about how they enjoy skinny dipping on their profile.

Ok, so you decide to implement an internal microblogging platform like Yammer or Socialcast, or even an internal Wiki platform like SocialText or Confluence. You go crazy making your business case based on the idea that people will be so much more productive. You are a hero. But where is the productivity?

If a new feature is riddled with bugs, you can’t just toe the company line and say it’s great – you have to be able to offer your honest, unbiased opinion. It’s very much like trying to teach someone to use a wiki for collaboration instead of using email. The Internal Community Manager wears many hats.

If you think that the enterprise-wide wiki you’ve been pushing to install is going to change the culture of your organization, think again. That wiki is going to reflect the culture of your organization, not change it. Use wikis to eliminate email! It will continue on the wiki. Enterprise 2.0 Enterprise 2.0

Use email less (internally) – One thing I’ve realized is that if I keep answering people’s emails, people will continue to send them to me, even if I explicitly tell them that they’re more likely to get a hold of me by posting their question/comment to my internal blog, contact me on Yammer, use my internal wiki page, etc.
