Yesterday I attended the Sharepoint geekfest at The Hilton Sydney. I plonked myself down in the front row, iPad at the ready, to listen to Daniel McPherson ( danmc ) talk about socialising the business with Sharepoint. Obvious one is Community Moderator for those that volunteer community admin duties. The Game of Work.

I’ve done a number of workshops the past few months with clients designed to do two primary things: Land a common understanding across the teams involved around what social media, communities and influencer programs really are and more importantly why it matters to a business. I wish that could be enough said.

Location-based applications like Foursquare and Brightkite will not be the darlings of social media as some predict, but will instead turn into features and dissolve into general social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Twitter recently rolled out its Geotagging capability on a limited basis.

It’s hip and cool to say Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging have replaced e-mail, and “anything worth saying can be said in 140 characters,” but it isn’t true. Running a business is a complex affair requiring complex communications. Had I sent it to her via Twitter, it would have required 60 separate messages.
