If I re-collect the recent developments, it is really fascinating to see so much happening on the ‘Social Media’ front in India. When we compare it with the same time last year, the ‘SM’ space seems to be so bright.
We’re witnessing more and more offline discussions about this subject, newer breed of quality bloggers who’re providing their perspective, research activities being carried about and even some very unique & collaborative efforts in online blogging. Bright and enthusiastic minds are engaging in quality conversations with a mutual feeling of participation/collaboration.

Fellow SM blogger, Gaurav Mishra has kick-started a fantastic collaborative effort to take stock of (Blogs, Blogging, and Bloggers) primarily reflecting the state of Blogosphere in India in 2009. Excellent initiative, the action has already started !!
There is a real dearth of numbers, statistics and trends on Social-media. Dear friend, Nimesh has provided an nice start to the year by conducting a small research on the ‘Social Media Landscape in India’. Do share information about other agencies/individuals who are doing focused research on this subject.
There are so many of us who are active in this subject. The beauty of web is that some are from from prominent Metros and some hail from the remotest places in the country. Mayank has realized this problem and has taken the task of compiling a consolidated list of Indians in Social Media. If you have been using/evangelizing social media in India don’t forget to add your name to the list here.
Blogs focused on social media usage by Indian corporates and brands have grown. Karthik’s Beast of Traal and Rudhrakssh’s Indian Social Media are two fine examples.

The usage of Twitter has picked up exponentially in India. #Mumbai was a trend-setter. It is heartening to see evangelical heads using twitter to discuss Social media trends and its future in India.

yes absolutely, Barrack Obama knows about Internet Marketing & the reach of Social Media marketing, but how about people who has half knowledge about Social Media strategies and internet marketing, there are maximum chances of failing in the initial stage. Then obviously people will start perceiving it as a wrong choice of communication. I think the consultant who explains their clients should build an approach using logic and not tools and approach. Such as relating it to the real life examples, so that the client develops clear anticipation toward digital Communications and does not give up easily
good one!! I absolutely agree with the fact that the social media is rising in India. People have started understanding the power of social media. Latest example is Obama. But we need to ensure that each campaign has its own specific needs and strategies.. we cant apply the same steps everywhere…. although logic would be same but approach should be different . . .
hey.. thanks for adding my blog buddy. yes its true that Indian Marketers have started realizing the importance of Social Media, but it might take some more time to actually create an impact , as our corporates still think that it is just Social Networking and Blogs. Despite of Blogs getting covered regularly in India Publications, people still fail to notice it. Moreover, they still think that just creating profiles and pitching Bloggers is sufficient. I have seen many people leaving their Digital Programmes in half way and donot even bother to maintain it. The best part of Digital Communicaitons is to maintain and not just creating it.
It’s great to see the social media mercury rising up in India.
All of a sudden it seems like lots of people are doing interesting work in the field but what remains to be seen is how and when the sector matures, will there be lots of independent players or some big companies with just a few freelancers.
Incidentally I haven’t noticed many people/agencies/companies using social media to improve customer service, especially. Would love to see that happening too.

Thanks for adding my blog in your write-up. I see a lot of potential for Indian companies to start engaging via social media – for marketing or for PR. The future looks good for social media consultants who can offer informed and sensible strategies of engagement.
