Yesterday Google announced the retirement of their Google Reader RSS reader product. I’ve tweeted a little about it but thought it might be interesting to see the response of readers to this news. Last time I surveyed ProBlogger and dPS reader Google Reader was the #1 reader for subscribing RSS feeds among our readers.

If you’re concerned that the demise of Google Reader will kill your blog, rest your eyes. In fact, I’m confident that it won’t – especially if you do these three things to increase your blog readership right now. Set up e-mail subscription – Few people within the general public ever figured out RSS enough to use an RSS reader, but everyone understands e-mail. You should set up an e-mail subscription link for your blog today and promote it wherever and whenever possible. I doubt that’s going to happen.

I love my blog. I love your blog. I love blogs. Loving blogs has nothing to do with me not loving the newer stuff. I love Twitter , Facebook , Google+ and other places to publish, share and connect too, but I have a soft spot for blogs. It was a punch in the gut yesterday to read this tweet from Gina Trapani : "Wow, Google Reader shutting down. It really IS the end of blogging and old school newsreaders. In case you haven’t heard, Google killed Google Reader. What that means is, if you had subscribers to your blog who were using Google Reader, then they either have to find another RSS news aggregrator in order to subscribe to your blog or you just lost a subscriber. The big question is, does this pose a problem for blog marketers? There are other ways you can attract subscribers to your blog. Even today, there are still people who don’t know what an RSS reader is, but everyone knows what e-mail is and uses it.

Google will soon shelve Reader and this has created a lot of panicky online noise from ardent fans. I have had a Reader account for several years now, but hadn’t really ever used it. I did, at one time, make use of an RSS reader called BlogBridge. But little by little Twitter and Facebook have taken over the reader duties for me. Today, we are hearing reports that Facebook is going to launch a reader application, and my first thought was, I hope this won’t change Facebook’s current update feeds. Do you use Google Reader?
