Tools for Content Discovery

It is not easy to keep hashing out awesome content ideas and you need some tools to kick start the idea flow.

1. Buzzsumo – is one of the best tools for idea generation. You can type in any search term to see the best performing content on that topic. You can also see the number of social shares for this content. The free account has some restrictions like the maximum number of searches per day and the number of rows you can see in the search results. You can trial the pro account for 14 days to see the tool’s full power. The pro account can show you the total number of backlinks per article or for a domain as a whole.

2. Quick Sprout – Until recently, I did not know about the ‘Social Media’ tab in QuickSprout. This is essentially an awesome feature in Buzzsumo that is free to access in QuickSprout. You can type in any URL, even a popular authority site and see which posts have performed well in social media by the number of social shares. QuickSprout also gives you quick SEO and website speed analysis along with recommendations for improvement.

3. Quora – lets you ask questions and answer questions from others. You can also see which answers have been the most popular or check out the trending questions. Quora has you covered from cooking to coding and their mission is to find the best answer to any question.

4. Google Trends – Experts say write on trending topics to reap SEO and traffic benefits and that is exactly what Google Trends allows you to do – find trending topics. Google Trends can be a quick idea generator before you embark on further research or start to write on a trend.

5. Alltop – It is hard to keep up with all the top blogs and that’s exactly what Alltop offers so you can see the kind of topics the big boys (or girls) are producing.

6. Twitter – is one of the most popular social media platforms for content distribution. Twitter also makes it easy to link influencers and authority figures directly. You can also use Twitter to identify trends in your industry.

7. LinkedIn Pulse – is a mobile app that pushes news feed of your selected topic to your device. Pulse keeps you up to speed in your industry in one news feed.

8. Evernote – Ideas don’t just flow when you want to write; sometimes they come when you are out and about. This is where a handy tool like Evernote can help capture your idea. Jot down the idea and get back to it for further research or content creation. A tool like Google’s new ‘Keep’ app on Android will also do the job. Just make sure the tool or app synchronises all your notes across various devices and transfers the notes when you swap into a new device.

Tools for Content Creation

Traditionally, bloggers use Content Management Systems (CMS) for content creation but you need some additional tools to make sure your content has some punch.

9. Google Docs or Word – Writing in your CMS is not the best approach. For example, WordPress keeps a new copy of each and every one of your drafts. Do you really need 100 drafts even before your post is published? Now imagine over a few years how many drafts will be clogging the server and ultimately affect your website speed. The other advantage is Google Docs or Word will pick up spelling and grammar issues better than a CMS unless of course you have a plugin for that. It is also easier to collaborate with someone else with online content writing tools.

10. Visual.ly – Go visual with Visually; this does not have to be your own creation (although that would be nice and Visually does offer this option) but you can also look for Infographics on topics that you want to write on. Use an image or infographic then build up your post around that. The human brain processes visuals 60,000 times faster than simple text. Also 65% of all viewers are visual learners.

11. Infogr.am – is a tool you can use to produce powerful Infographics and visuals for free. Statistics and graphs don’t have to be boring and can be interactive using Infogram. Check out this Infographic on quality content that was created using Infogram. Some icons are only available on premium membership.

12. TinyMCE – If you like to create your content in WordPress rather than Google Docs or Microsoft Word then you definitely need a plugin like TinyMCE to make sure your spelling and grammar are correct.

13. Text Broker – If you don’t have the time to create your own content or not confident with the quality of your content then you will have to pay for good content and Text Broker can help you find writers at varying quality and price. One of the cool features of Text Broker is, it allows you to get an estimated cost for an article based on word count and quality level that you select.

14. Problogger Job Board – Another location for freelance writers is Problogger. You can find bloggers for most niches from WordPress to Wedding here. Problogger is managed by the blogging master mind Darren Rowse as most of you would know.

Tools for Content Delivery

Most new bloggers think their job is done once they create the content and share it in their social media profiles. The below list of tools are longer than the other two categories as this is what determines the amount of traffic and viewers you get. This is also the area where we need the most help and tools.

15. Yoast – You need at least one SEO plugin so you can better manage your SEO affairs. Yoast is one of them and an alternative plugin is ‘All in one SEO’. An SEO plugin that will maximize SEO rankings is a must.

16. Buffer – Have you heard an expert say ‘I have scheduled an update’ via social media? What they mean is they have so many updates they have to schedule them and Buffer is an example of a tool that allows users to do that. You can schedule your updates to various social media platforms with a few mouse clicks. You can also select days and times for your social media updates.

17. Click to tweet – Have you seen ‘Click Here to tweet’ buttons on some blogs? They are examples of this app. You simply type in the message you want to be tweeted and select an image if you want one. You then simply copy html code that you can drop into WordPress or any other CMS.

18. Tweroid – You can work out the best tweeting times for your followers with Tweroid; this maximizes the exposure of your content. Tweroid can produce reports that reveals the best days and times to tweet based on your followers activity.

19. Slideshare – This is one of my favourite traffic generation and marketing source. I turn each Infographic I create into a presentation and upload to Slideshare. You can also turn your text based content into a presentation. Don’t forget to make your presentation visual and include some engaging images.

20. Outbrain – is a content discovery platform which will share your content with premium sites for a small fee. If you want more traffic and are willing to pay a small fee then they are a good bet.

21. Monarch – is a Social Sharing Plugin. With Monarch your social media buttons don’t have to be static, in fact they can even scroll along the page. You can even get the sharing buttons to appear on media elements like an image on any of your web pages.

22. aWeber – You need a tool to manage your email list and subscribers. aWeber is one of the best autoresponding and email broadcasting tool. aWeber has 1 month free trial so do give them a shout if you are not sure which email management tool to choose. Email subscribers are the best recurring source of traffic so build your list from day one.

23. Google Webmaster Tools – I should rather say Google here, as there are plenty of Google tools that you cannot live without – one of them is Google Webmaster Tools. Regularly check your webmaster tools account to make sure you are on the right side of Google and see what improvements you need to make so you stay ahead of the game.

24. LinkedIn Groups – According to Neil Patel & Rob Cubbon LinkedIn groups are an underutilized traffic source. Find groups that match your niche with over 100,000 members and share your content. Rob even goes further to say LinkedIn is a professional group with skilled individuals and you can even tap in for advice or content ideas.

Conclusion

I am sure there are plenty of other tools we could include here. Tools that make your job easier are worth your time and you might find other tools that drain your energy. Hopefully the list of tools here can save you some time so you can focus on creating content or find other avenues to market your content.
