Mourning the Loss of Resilience

Janet Fouts

?. Our nation is mourning the loss of civil rights icon U.S. John Lewis. As I watched his casket cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge for the final time, the very bridge he marched every year in the peaceful pursuit of ending racial segregation since the 1960s, I reflected on his powerful presence and mindful response to the many adversities he faced. His dedication to the highest ethical standards and moral principles penetrated partisan politics and united all as the conscience of the U.S. Congress.

Give a #Caregiver a break – #WhenLifeHitstheFan

Janet Fouts

As a caregiver and an entrepreneur, I know only too well how overloaded we can be. The most common refrain I hear from caregivers is “I don’t have time to take care of myself” The thing is, if we don’t take time to care for ourselves, everyone suffers, including those we care for. When I wrote “when Life Hits the Fan” it was the beginning of a journey to help caregivers learn how to use mindfulness to take better care of themselves and others too.

Why retreats are important

Janet Fouts

I remember the first retreat I went on. It’s been some years now, but I remember how nervous I was. Thinking I’d stick out like a sore thumb, maybe judged as a newbie. Could I last 3 days? I really had no idea what was going to happen beyond what I’d read in the brochure, and that was pretty slim. But I needed a break for myself, and some help figuring some stuff out, so I took a leap of faith. Yes, some parts were challenging. I chose a silent retreat, which was ambitious.

Living with Resilience

Janet Fouts

Things are a little crazy in our world right now. The economy, Covid19, politics and a host of things that seem small, but all add up to a lot of fear, frustration, anger, and resentment. Resentment is an evil beastie, and sometimes we don’t recognize it until it’s WAY too late. When it goes unrecognized we can really cause a lot of hurt, and we might not even know that resentment is at the root of it all. What’s going on?

On celebrating the holidays, wishes and realities of #Caregiving

Janet Fouts

I’ve been thinking a lot about how this holiday season affects everyone in different ways, no matter what our faith. For some, it is a season of generosity and giving. Enjoying the act of giving for others and accepting the warm feeling that it brings can fill a person’s heart with joy. For some, it’s a season of receiving. How many children right now are making a holiday list of all they dream of for holiday gifts? How many will feel pangs of disappointment when they don’t get that one thing?

How Can I help You?

Janet Fouts

Business as usual just doesn’t exist for most of the world right now. On top of that many of the resources we’ve learned to rely on have either stopped or gone virtual. An article in the New York Times in 2019 (pre pandemic) indicated that Americans were the most stressed-out population in the world! I’m not sure how those numbers would look now, but I’m willing to guess that stress levels are at an all-time high worldwide. What can we do about it?

Are You Trapped In Overwhelm Mode?

Janet Fouts

You may not have heard of it, but there’s this thing called “ Responsibility Fatigue ”. It happens to a lot of us when we simply can’t say no. The more we don’t say no, the more people rely on us. At home, at work, out in the world. Sometimes it literally feels like there’s a sign on our forehead that says “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it”! And so we get overloaded, exhausted, often more than a little frustrated or angry.

Employee Benefits Programs Missing the Mark?

Janet Fouts

In a recent report from the Harvard Business School ( The Caring Company ) less than 25% of employers say that being a caregiver impacts the performance of employees. Wow, that’s simply obtuse when over 80% of employees surveyed said that caregiving had impacted their performance. 20% of those interviewed stated that being a caregiver hurt their careers. My own experiences with caregivers certainly bear witness to this.
