It’s something that you use almost every day, but how much do you really know about social media? We’re going in-depth, behind the scenes, on a mission to bring you facts. Maybe you know some of them already, but you definitely don’t know all of them, so take a look at the complete graphic once you’re done here.
Social Media Is The New Newspaper
Did you know that Reddit is the most popular social media platform as a source of news? It is. Facebook is only second place in this category, which is different because they lead in most other aspects. Twitter comes in at a close third, with Tumblr and Instagram rounding out the top five.
Younger people are more likely to be making the change to news on social media. 68% of millennials reported that they get most of their news from Facebook, and 24% of high school students reported that Instagram is the place to be for news these days.
But don’t cancel your subscription to your “oldspaper” just yet. Although people’s habits are changing as to how they choose to view their news, they are generally still looking at the same old media. For the most part, people are still looking at stories and articles from the old media—they’re just doing it in digital format now.
You’re Hired
Well, not you, we’re not hiring right now, but “you” in general can find yourself a job on social media. 73% of companies recently reported that they have successfully hired a candidate from a social media search.
LinkedIn was reported as the most popular choice for employers to use when looking to take on new workers. In fact, 93% of those surveyed said they used LinkedIn during their search.
Facebook and Twitter are not even close to LinkedIn, but they are still being monitored. 66% of employers say they checked Facebook, and 54% say they checked Twitter. However, Twitter is the winner when it comes to reaching millennials, as this platform has a generally younger user base than Facebook or LinkedIn.
Be careful what you allow your potential employer to find while they’re scouting your pages though. That new job offer could vanish in an instant if they come across something stupid you posted on a late night out with friends, or any number of other things, and it could sink your chances of getting that job. So, if you are currently looking for a job, or think you may be in the near future, then some things are just better not shared so publicly.
What Is More Addictive?
That’s a strange question you’re asking. Strange, indeed. We have an answer though, because we enjoy weird stats like that. So, as you asked, which social media platform has people coming back every single day to check in? Or, more likely, several times per day.
- Facebook wins in this statistic, with 70% of users coming back to check on their feed every day.
- Instagram is the second most addictive platform, with 59% of its users coming back each day to look at shiny new things.
- Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest complete the top five, with 38%, 27%, and 22% of its users coming back every day to see what’s new.
What About The Future?
At the moment, counting the whole world, only 31% of us are using some form of social media. Of course, this varies greatly by region. North America has the most social media use, with 59% of the population, but Africa and South Asia both only have 11% of the population going social online.
The good thing is that internet access is starting to spread to all corners of the globe and, perhaps more importantly, the price of internet-connected devices is going down.
However, not all new internet users seem to be picking up social media straight away. Since 2014, the percentage of the world population with internet access has gone up by 11%, but the percentage who use social media has only gone up 5% during that same time.
These figures also include people who have had internet access for a long time and have started to drop off social media for one reason or another, so it’s hard to say exactly how many new users just aren’t jumping on board to replace the old.
Social In Sixty Seconds
- 4.1 million “likes” on Facebook every minute, and 2.4 million on Instagram.
- 136,000 photos on Facebook every minute, and 43,000 on Instagram.
- 435,000 tweets every minute on Twitter.
- 293,000 statuses on Facebook every minute, and 28,000 posts on Instagram.
We can’t possibly go through all of the 115 facts you can learn about in the infographic. So, don’t let us stop you, get to it. You may even find something that will help, particularly if you’re in a business where social media is one of the keys to success.
