As a professional working in social media , I spend most of my day working on developing strategies to leverage channels like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blogs to engage with customer communities. Then, when the day is over…I spend more time researching new tools, looking into the rumors of whether company X is buying company Y, reading articles about the latest digital technology and building connections with other bloggers and social media professionals.

Tweet Beginning of 2012 has brought in a lot of predictions and opportunities. Another chance to look at the social media universe, analyse the trends and make the strategies. 25-34 year olds are now the largest age group on Facebook as we enter 2012, with users under 17 years making up just 5% of the user base. LinkedIn. LinkedIn also continues to grow, and now looks to reach around 10% of the UK population.

Tweet Recently, Awarness Inc released a report called The State of Social Media Marketing : Top Areas For Social Marketing Investment and Biggest Social Marketing Challenges in 2012. This report looks at key different areas of your social media strategy like monitoring, investments, human resource allocations and last but the most important one – the challenges. Only 19% reported using a social media management platform in 2011.

This year, colleague Cheryl Burgess and I changed things up a bit, opening the award to nominations but focusing specifically on outstanding men and women who work for technology companies and are active on social media. Not only leaders in their professional lives, nearly all these women use their social profiles to express their passions outside the workplace, which range from NASCAR, art, travel, billiards, wine and music to community service, politics and, of course, family.

What a year was 2011 for social media and marketing! I watched and experienced first-hand the marketing and social media landscape change, consolidate, focus, develop and evolve all at the same time. As I’ve said before, social media needs to be INTEGRATED into your overarching marketing plan. But social media is a powerful marketing medium that MUST be used in your marketing tactics today. Combine 300 channels in my cable package, with an extremely short attention span and you have all the ingredients necessary for an evening of click…click…click… Are you changing the channels too quickly when it comes to social media? The same problem exists in the realm of social media, though. Blend crappy programming with an unwillingness to understand the channels and you have all the makings for channel surfing in social media.

My short presentation focused on how to use social media for job search. I gave a brief overview on how recruiters use social media to source applicants and advertise vacancies. I used my own experiences as a case study (including confessing my Coronation Street addiction) and shared a poll of Ottawa PR Facebookers I had recently done to find out which social networks are important for job search in this market. Developing a social media strategy isn’t easy, especially with so many channels out there…it sometimes feels like social media overload ! But ignoring social media outright definitely isn’t a good strategy. Just like building a “quick business plan” isn’t a good idea, building a quick social strategy likely won’t succeed either. Too many folks get caught up in the numbers game when it comes to social media. They use numbers like “friends”, “followers” and…ewww…”Klout” to determine whether they are doing social right. Heaven knows that it doesn’t tell you whether you’re engaging in social media properly. Because he doesn’t have a clue as to how to become a contributing member of the social space.

While those social-focused conferences are fertile ground when it comes to social media programs, CES is full of salespeople and executives who, generally speaking, are less socially-savvy than conferences in the social media bubble.

The biggest category of content that attracted visitors to SocMedSean.com in 2011 was definitely my social media comic strips. What started as a review of the StripGenerator social network (a social network for people who like to create comics), quickly turned into a fun, entertaining passion for converting real-life social media conversations into humorous art. Finding a social media professional to help you with your online activities can sometimes be a tough process. 1) How long have you been engaged in social networking and/or social media channels? Believe it or not, online social networking didn’t start with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Plenty of social media professionals have experience that goes back to online bulletin boards, forums on CompuServe, Prodigy, and AOL, and online forums.

I have also found plenty of younger (and not necessarily “less experienced”) folks who still tell me that they “just don’t get it” or that “social media is just about people posting high school photos or talking about what they had for breakfast” Based on these experiences, I’ll attribute the failure to embrace these new mediums as either lack of education or fear of change.

Social media offers a lot of great opportunities and access to information. Here are a few steps I took to keep from spending too much time with my digital relationships and not enough time in real life: Schedule your time…and stick to it – I consistently spend 1 hour in the morning and 2 hours at night to work in the social space. Put the phone down and stop checking your social channels and email.

Social Media is ubiquitous. If you don’t know what that means, it means that everywhere you turn, social media is there. Because we are becoming an “always on” society and are never more than 3 steps from our mobile devices and computers, social is invading everything we do. In fact, I kinda failed which is what prompted me to write down my tips for taking a vacation from social media, both for myself and anyone else that might benefit.

There is no doubt that 2012 is going to be THE year of social media. Even old-school marketers and brand managers are starting to wake up and figure out that social media isn’t a passing fad, it isn’t just about “cats on skateboards” and “people eating oatmeal” and that ignoring the conversation is only going to leave them further behind their competition. Those are all important factors in how NOT to engage in social media.

In a previous blog post , Jonas made a summary of a report called “The State of Social Media Marketing” from January 2012 in which he outlined the key points and conclusions drawn from the report. A couple of days ago, Awareness, Inc released the second part of the same report , which points out some useful statistics for the second half of 2012. As in the beginning of 2012 the big three – Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn – remain at the top positions.

It turns out that some people are less than trusting of social media (for shame!) Unique visitors in Q2 2012 totaled 106 million, according to comScore, and pageviews dropped slightly from 9.4 In the second quarter of 2012, revenue was up 89% over the same period a year ago. LinkedIn’s revenue sources include display ads, subscriptions for premium services, and jobs board. Unlike Facebook, LinkedIn does not rely largely on advertising as a revenue source.

Of the three largest social networking sites in the United States, I plan to use Facebook the most, LinkedIn the second-most, and Twitter the least. LinkedIn in 2013. I will continue to seek out new connections who are strategically aligned with my interests and passions in social media marketing, open government, and social change. Curated lists were used a lot in 2012 and will be leveraged much more frequently to categorize people and observe trends.
