Smaller companies could succeed with this method by marketing — verbally or through their website — to groups of devout followers and keeping their Twitter streams current (offering a daily deal or frequent deals that encourage customers to seek out discounts and sales). Twitter as a feed reader (for more important feeds).

Facebook and/or MySpace are useful social networks where you can build outposts (see next list). Get a Gmail.com account for use with reader, calendar, docs, and more. Build RSS outposts on Facebook. Another promotion tool: use the status section of LinkedIn and Facebook. It also connects you to other practitioners.
