PLEs are meant to simplify managing these artefacts, creating meaning through aggregation, linking and metadata tagging (eg comments, keywords). These allow custom extensions, which may pave the way for the development of open APIs for connection by PLEs. A PLE could be implemented as a mashup. This prototype is called PLEX.
