I joined Twist Image in 2002. While it's just an avatar, you really do get the sense like you are seeing and interacting with them (even if all you're doing is creeping on their content). I wish I knew Michael O'Connor Clark better. The company already existed. Michael was always in my feed. Day in and day out.

As you may well know, I started blogging back in 2002. When I started Digital Photography School I created avatars to represent the different types of people I’d be writing for. The best of these commenters in my experience tend to use a personal name (and where possible use a personal avatar). Note : on avatars, it can be worth registering for a Gravatar account as this is often used for avatars on many blogs. In fact this advice is Day 20 in our 31 Days to Build a Better Blog workbook.

Having said those things, I want to talk about these nine things that have helped me to accelerate the growth of my blogs over the years, things I wish I knew back in 2002 when I started out and I hope that that will help you in your journey as well. I started blogging in 2002. Gradually over time, I began to deepen my avatars.

I started blogging in 2002, 2004 for ProBlogger, of course things have changed. Ideally, what you want to create is some kind of avatar or persona or reader profile for your blog. Include a sentence or two about who is reading your blog, and maybe refer to the avatar if you’ve done that exercise.

For me, it all started in 2002 with an email from a friend. Okay, It was 2002 and I got this email and it had four words in it and a link. Some people would call them personas or avatars today. I know some people like personas and avatars, other people don’t. Whether you’ve got an avatar or not, understand these things.
