Top Brands on Twitter: Enterprise Brands Vs. Small Companies

Wondering how enterprise brands and small businesses are using Twitter?  A new study from Simply Measured compares the Twitter accounts of the Interbrand 2013 Top 100 Brands and the Forbes 100 Best Small Companies in America to analyze how successful brands of different sizes use the micro-blogging social platform.

For starters, here are some key findings from the report:

  • 98% of all top brands are active on Twitter
  • 92% of brands tweet at least once daily; the average Interbrand company tweets 12x per day
  • over 36% of all brand links contain tweets
  • audiences grew by 20% in the fourth quarter of 2013
  • tweets that include photos and links receive 150% more engagement than brand averages
  • Interbrand companies average 43,100 engagements per month
  • 54% of Interbrand companies send less than one @reply per day

How frequently are top brands from each list posting to Twitter? Here’s the breakdown:

Tweet Frequency of Top Brands - Simply Measured study

In terms of simple follower numbers, the Interbrand companies are (not surprisingly) well in the lead: 58% of Interbrand Top 100 companies have an audience of 100,000 or more on Twitter. Out of the Forbes 100, 17% have 5,000+ followers, 9% have 10,000+ followers, and just 3% have 50,000 or more followers.
