[Twitter] Fight U.S. Government Internet Censorship
If you want to protect free speech and innovation, and keep services open with names such as Twitter and Facebook, you need to ask your elected officials in Washington to oppose the PIPA and SOPA bills. The video above discusses the U.S. Senate version of the PROTECT IP Act , but the House bill, the Stop Online Piracy Act , is worse. If passed by Congress, the government will receive new powers to block Americans’ access to websites that corporations don’t like. On the recommendation of BufferApp from Misty Belardo I have incorporated BufferApp into my Twitter routine—my Routwine, if you will. service like BufferApp can be very useful in the strategies of bloggers and online marketers who are looking to leverage the social power of Twitter to share information. The great thing about it is how easy it makes queuing up a list of tweets that can potentially reach more people with similar interests to you—which can, at the very least, increase your Twitter reach, drive traffic, and raise your social influence. And I’m not even sure that information paralysis is the real problem, as we can cut down those inputs if we need to – even just by closing a feed reader or Twitter client, or by turning off the PC or TV. The concept of information overload has received a lot of debate, and I completely agree with Clay Shirky that it’s actually ‘filter failure’ which is causing our current obsession with the problems of keeping up with the influx of content which is published and digitally accessible at a far greater rate than any time in human history. Recently, a colleague told me about his rule of thumb for negotiating business deals: if someone gave you exactly what you asked for, without negotiating, you asked for too little. This rule of thumb feels so wrong to me at so many levels. One, it presumes that what you are offering has no intrinsic value, even in a specific context. You ask for whatever you can get. When you are on the other side of the table, you give as little as you can. Three, it presumes that fairness is foolish.
