[Twitter] Book Excerpt: The Death of Facebook
Business leaders and strategists cannot afford to become too entrenched on a mega social network like Facebook or Twitter. The following is an excerpt from Welcome to the Fifth Estate , Chapter 7: Sustaining Your Community Over Time. Who in their right mind would predict the death of Facebook, given its ever-increasing dominance? But everyone always asks, “What’s next?”. One thing long-term Internet citizens have seen over the past 30 years: Communities and social networks get large, even as dominant as Facebook now is, and then they fade. Ice cream? McDonald’s offers soft serve. Salad?

Their use of Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter has risen over the last two years, yet they are somewhat behind in their adoption of Google+, Pinterest, SlideShare, and other “newer” social media options, so it will be interesting to see if they grow in these areas over the next year. Today we have a guest blog post from Lisa Murton Beets director of CMI Books, from the Content Marketing Institute. How Manufacturers are Managing Content Marketing: 7 B2B Insights. [Twitter] Forget The Hype – A Business’ Success Still Relies On The Basics
While we can sing the praises of Facebook, Twitter and the many other opportunities there are for marketing a business both online and offline, a business’ success still comes back to the basics. There is an interesting article that comes from an Australian university examining the rise and fall of Starbucks in that country. This article is one that should be read by anyone already in business and looking to expand into new markets. It’s also worth reading for any brick and mortar business that is considering adding an online store. Starbucks also misread the market.

[Twitter] Memo to Social Media Pros – Social Media is NOT necessary for the C-suite
Unsurprisingly the usage in this group was quite low: 3.8% of Fortune 500 CEOs use Twitter. You know what this is right? Earlier this week, my pal Gini Dietrich (even though she has zero skills in Draw Something , we are still cool) wrote a post showcasing social media usage by CEOs in the Fortune 500. 7.6% of these CEOs are on Facebook. 25.9% of them are on LinkedIn – not surprising given their role in partnerships and recruiting.8% are on Google+ – Larry Page is the leader in the clubhouse1.2% contribute to blogs. 0 are on Pinterest. [Twitter] The Fluidity and Demands of Social Business Work
Strapping hours on your Twitter bio will not forever meet the needs of customers, employees, partners, supply chain, and the people who deliver on the work we’ve ultimately promised. Few of us work a 5-day, 40-hour week anymore. So if that’s true, and we’ve largely accepted that, why are we still trying to force social business evolution into the bounds of those days and hours? Fluidity is a continually emerging reality in business. Stack that, however, against the ever-present reality that the online world does not tick according to the industrial era clock. Sound off.

[Twitter] Should Companies Situate ALL of Their Marketing Around the iPad?
Facebook and Twitter have known it for a while. I didn’t get an original iPad. Rip on me after you’ve at least scanned the article. It’ll be short. This means that you need to: Avoid Flash. It is the plague.

That might not be e-mail, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. In 1969, Stanley Milgram performed a neat trick. He had 1 to 15 actors stare up at a window of a high office building while he counted how many others stopped to look. He found the more actors he had, the more people would stop and glance up at the window.    This experiment was repeated in 2011 with modern tracking technology. The more actors who glanced up, the more passers by would follow.   However, when the crowds were thickest and people were faster moving (busier), this effect was significantly reduced.

[Twitter] How ebay could care less about a fraud call
Yesterday I got some fishy emails from eBay noting that I had printed a boat ton of shipping labels and was charged for them. Upon checking my eBay and PayPal accounts, there was nothing there so, I figured it was just a phishing scheme… unfortunately it was not. My account got hacked and I got charged close to $400 for shipping labels for something that I had shipped out in July.

Instead of looking at all  of the things within your marketing plan that are designed, in whole or in part, to increase lead generation and determining whether that business goal is in good shape, we try to dive straight to attributing leads to Twitter or whether we should have two or three posts per day on Instagram. [Twitter] My thoughts on Facebook’s commenting system
You may want to keep Facebook personal, and use Twitter/LinkedIn/your blog or site as your professional reference. There’s been a lot of debate around Facebook’s new commenting system, particularly due to the fact it is currently being tested on Techcrunch. That’d work for a couple of weeks.
