For 5 years now I’ve been building tech that brings people together for life-changing conversations (Veterati, twine).
Most recently, Lawrence Coburn & I cofounded twine in Nov 2019 to end loneliness by creating a place where people could explore humanity, one conversation at a time. Lawrence wrote a beautiful piece introducing twine here.
Originally, we were going to do this with a mobile app that acted as your matchmaker and guide at real-life gatherings, dropping you into no-small-talk convos with different partners in the room.
However, our plans have changed. And like many companies that are finding ways to help people during this crisis (car manufacturers creating ventilators, vodka distilleries creating hand sanitizer, 3d printers creating masks, restaurants become bodegas), we know we can help too.
As humans we are meant to be there for each other, and one of the most difficult things about socially isolating is that it goes against our nature of wanting to come together to help each other during the hard times.
That’s why we’re releasing a new version of the twine app, that will will enable anyone from all over the world to get matched to others in our community for deep, 1-to-1 convos, VIA VIDEO. Friends who sign up here will get access to a private launch in just a few weeks.
Here’s how it works:
- Join twine gatherings via our app - from the comfort of your home
- Choose from our library of 250+ deep questions; get matched to partners interested in exploring the same ones
- RSVP for twine digital gatherings, which happen regularly in your time zone
- Check in when it's time to to start, a virtual guide will set the ground rules
- Gatherings last for 40 minutes, and you’ll have 1-to-1 video convos with 4 different partners (8 minutes each)

We feel a great sense of responsibility in delivering this to our community, because we know twine is needed more than ever, now. That’s why we’ve made a hard decision (as a small team, early-stage startup) to waive all membership fees and make our app free for anyone to use through Jun1, 2020.
