But it is possible to make some basic comparisons using data from some of the free tools that are available. Since I’ve been comparing major news sites in variety of areas ( Facebook and Twitter impact; YouTube and new Digg activity; site speed and domain authority , among others) I thought I’d look at overall social media engagement too.

But CNN did get two embedded video listings on the page, beating out YouTube: Finally, for the query “mosque near ground zero ABC” NPR and AP got the Google News listings, not ABC. It does happen some of the time, but this looks like a coincidence based on algorithmic relevance as opposed to being by design.

To get your videos into Google News you need to create a YouTube channel. Other video hosters may be included in the future, but for now YouTube is the only way in. This confirms a recent discussion in a Google help thread (See Google News Now Recrawling Updated Articles for more information).

PitchEngine is a good tool that provides a useful service, and it’s reasonably priced (in fact it’s free if you only keep your SMRs on their site for 30 days). The contest was hosted on YouTube, and therefore the videos lived on YouTube.
