Pam Moore created a Twitter chat last night and asked people to explain the return on investment of social media. Some responses: One thing I'll offer off the bat: ROI is vital, but not every social activity should have ROI. Stop asking about social media ROI and start learning how to measure.

Social media posts expire very quickly. Metrics are worse on Twitter – with a half-life four times shorter! One takeaway is you must be memorable and analytical in every social media post. Another takeaway is to stop using social media for sharing big thoughts — and to blog about it instead.

Penelope Trunk once wrote about portraying yourself on social media : Each of us is multi-faceted. With a selection of media to choose from, we can express different parts of ourselves in different ways. I see people using Twitter for a lot of stuff, but not for fleshed-out ideas. Way better than, say, Twitter.

While he focused on the interconnectedness of links between blogs, his description goes to the heart of what social media means. I recently started throwing out my social media rules and embracing the ripples that were always there but I chose not to see. Social media is about being social.

Of the three largest social networking sites in the United States, I plan to use Facebook the most, LinkedIn the second-most, and Twitter the least. I will continue to seek out new connections who are strategically aligned with my interests and passions in social media marketing, open government, and social change.
