During our research for the book, one of the IBMers with whom we spoke extensively was Ethan McCarty (@ EthanMCC ), whose “bag of marbles” metaphor captured our imaginations as we were writing and heavily influenced our vision of what the social employee was all about. [Social Media] Tangential Innovation Communities
In an earlier article (Cluster Funk) I argued that Industrial clusters can lead to stagnation, vulnerability to external shocks, and the erosion of social capital. The system is naturally diversified and inoculated against stagnation, shocks and silos; if one industry encounters hardship, people and capacity can shift easily to another industry preserving knowledge and expanding social networking benefit while the damaged industry heals or dies off. Corporations may not like this idea, but social networks should. Make it up as you go along. Why compete when you can collude?

I sit on the social media committee at AMEC and the valid metrics framework is a great planning tool to use when coming up with a measurement approach that will actually deliver meaningful results. [Social Media] Top-Level Numbers Are Candy
In the course of writing a review of Social Media Metrics , Jim Sterne's excellent overview, I thought of some similarities in how easy it is to focus on the least useful numbers. Drill into the social media numbers Social media generates some feel-good numbers, too. Way back when MTV played music videos, I was on the radio. On the creative side, we got excited about the ratings—especially when we topped the market. When I was on the sales side, I learned about how the business uses those numbers. Somebody had to have "the most popular" station.

When we first started offering social media services in 2006, many people dismissed it as crazy. When you ask most business people these days how they are doing, many reply, “busy.” ” You Don’t Know What Busy Is. I don’t think that most people know what busy really is.  There is a desire to look as if you’re doing important work, but how often are you taking breaks, binge watching Netflix, and surfing through your Facebook feed? In today’s mobile and uber-connected world, PR and social media go hand-in-hand. By Stacey Hood. From the dawn of man, the instinct to survive has been strong in all of us. We either confront things head on (fight) or avoid/ignore them (flight). We occasionally do both, depending on the circumstances. This is a coping mechanism, part of our DNA. We’ve read the stories before of the child who survives in the woods for a few days at the age of 10 or the mom who lifts the car up off of a family member. Bullying.

It’s something that leaders and communication specialists have a privilege and duty to work on every day. Company’s culture consists of many small details. So how to we get the image of a great workplace? Mission and Values.

The crimes are so socially heinous that the reader immediately swears off the behavior and rushes to comment and separate themselves from the wrongdoers. I hate 98% of opinion posts. rarely write opinion posts because they are the blogging equivalent of smoking weed. Like weed, they seem harmless, but after a while, they make you lazy, dumb, and boring. The real problem is that it takes a great deal of skill to write a credible and logical opinion post. [Social Media] All Polls and Surveys Are Not Equal
This degradation in quality is indicative of a larger trend on the social web, the erosion of expertise (and professionalism) caused by social media content. Mind you, this erosion has not only impacted the new media content producer, but also the traditional journalism field as both our Microsoft and Google+ examples will show. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the browser IQ test was widely reported by the media, which did not verify the data. Finally, the BBC determined the research was a hoax, but not before the media had popularized Explorer as a low IQ tool.

[Social Media] The Keys to Effective Communication
The print media—newspapers and magazines—used to be a good general way to reach large numbers of people, but people under the age of 30 tend not to rely on the print media for their information as much as previous generations.  If you want to reach members of that generation, social media might be the better approach to take. Your reputation and brand are really all you have—it’s your first impression, so make it count. Fortunately, you’re largely in charge of your brand since most of it is built online. It’s something we can all do on a daily basis.

But now I was angry and pledged to deliver a SMBS (social media bitch slap) on the off-chance it occurred again. I’ve been in marketing communications since shortly after the earth cooled and I have seen a lot of poorly conceived advertising and marketing programs. But in today’s unstable market, I’m seeing some unstable marketing, too. For instance, about a month ago, I received a sort of desperate sounding note from a mortgage consultant that I didn’t know. The same holds true with Google+, as that social medium is now ranked second only to Facebook as far as its member numbers. As more businesses find the worth in having mobile apps, getting more social about it only makes sense. If your business has a mobile app presence, get more social about it in 2014. Photo credit:
