[Social Media] Microsoft/Yahoo Will Take Google’s Eye Off The Ball – Twitter & Facebook Can Pounce
I’ve long professed that search and social are going to merge and that those big Google dollars will be up for play.  An interesting wrinkle has occurred with Bing and now the Microsoft & Yahoo deal.  It’s anyone’s guess on how this will play out.  This is good for Twitter and Facebook as it takes Google’s attention away from Social Media; which I would argue is still Google’s greatest threat.  Why shouldn’t products and services that our social graph has vetted be pushed our way? The Yahoo Way or the Highway? Is it worth it?

Hard To Find Social Media Icons. You want users to “Like” you on Facebook, and follow you on “Twitter,” but your social media icons aren’t clearly visible on your homepage. First dates can be awkward. They make you question a lot of things. How do I look? Will they like me? What should I say? As the saying goes, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Like a first date, you may think that the first visit to your website went great until you realize it’s been more than a week later and you’ve heard nothing back from your potential user. [Social Media] Why Direct Mail Marketing Still Has A Unique Role To Play
It’s a domain now domineered by the art of e-mail, social media and extensive search marketing. Within today’s marketing environment, we find ourselves far more closely aligned with the digital, rather than the physical. Certainly, while direct mail marketing isn’t extinct, it seems to have been very much consigned to the shadows in some quarters. Written by Mike Hall. [Social Media] Prove Yourself
Your boss doesn’t want you to explain why social media is amazing. Are you trying to evangelize social media at your place? If you’re looking to say that social media will help your hotel, don’t show them the runaway success of the Roger Smith hotel in New York. Don’t show your floor manager how AJ Bombers in Milwaukee conquered the social media world. Your boss wants more results that make her look good. Your boss doesn’t care who I am. She wants you to excel at the tasks you’ve been assigned. Prove it.

For the past two years I’ve been chiding marketers who ask “What’s the ROI of social media?&# as one of their top questions. Asking “what’s the ROI of social media&# first will not lead one along the path to enlightenment but only further into obscurity and irrelevance. Social media employs principles of games as is evident in FourSquare, and of course video games also apply the same principles. The other day I was doing some cold calling a neighborhood and to make it fun I decided to turn it into a game. Each time I went into a business, I challenged myself to improve my presentation and afterwards I scored myself as I walked out. It made the experience more fun, while giving me an element of challenge to focus on. Every activity becomes part of the game and as such you become focused on learning the rules as well as learning how to bend them.
