Now you don’t need to hand me a cold compress, the ole ballgame has embraced social media in a cool way with their new Pulse.

In the course of writing a review of Social Media Metrics , Jim Sterne's excellent overview, I thought of some similarities in how easy it is to focus on the least useful numbers. Drill into the social media numbers Social media generates some feel-good numbers, too. Way back when MTV played music videos, I was on the radio. On the creative side, we got excited about the ratings—especially when we topped the market. When I was on the sales side, I learned about how the business uses those numbers. Somebody had to have "the most popular" station.

[Social Media] The Keys to Effective Communication
The print media—newspapers and magazines—used to be a good general way to reach large numbers of people, but people under the age of 30 tend not to rely on the print media for their information as much as previous generations.  If you want to reach members of that generation, social media might be the better approach to take. This is the latest guest post from Steven Worth of  Plexus Consulting. ——————-. It is an old lesson—saying something is not the same as being heard.  Content of course is important.  Potluck

[Social Media] All Polls and Surveys Are Not Equal
This degradation in quality is indicative of a larger trend on the social web, the erosion of expertise (and professionalism) caused by social media content. Mind you, this erosion has not only impacted the new media content producer, but also the traditional journalism field as both our Microsoft and Google+ examples will show. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the browser IQ test was widely reported by the media, which did not verify the data. But compared to new Internet marketing strategies like social media and video marketing, it’s as old as the hills. This is such a basic truth that it’s hard to believe that online marketers attempt to run a business using other tools without a website. I see Internet marketers using social media, forums, articles, videos, Squidoo Lenses and HubPages, and all sorts of other online channels without first having built their own hub – the company website. It’s interesting to note, however, that what worked in 1992 still can work in 2011.

Does the increase in hiring people with knowledge about all things social represent more production? So we must begin to ask how can we use all things social to improve productivity gains? We wonder why much of the on-line dialog about social media is about ROI.

[Social Media] Are you an iCitizen?
Simply search a representative to find his or her committees, recent votes and even social media handles–should you need to air your grievances. I just got this in my email from PureWow: We took eighth-grade government. We  know  that voting is our civic duty (and we would never miss an opportunity to get that sticker). Yet last week’s election had us spinning: We’re confident as to where we stand on key issues, but it feels almost impossible to be equally informed about  everything  on the ballot. What’s a “land exchange proposition” anyway? That’s not all.

Coupled with social media, a coupon can be leveraged to influence the behavior of whole communities in extraordinary ways.   The ability to manipulate coupon values is tantamount to the ability to manipulate the value of money itself. Ownership is a cornerstone of all forms of Capitalism, including Social Capitalism. This will be the convergent force that strengthens community ties and introduces huge opportunities for social entrepreneurs to create new value. This influence is what makes a discount coupon very powerful and extremely valuable. The Domino Effect.

[Social Media] Let Brands Be Brands
But let’s not get mired in the ills of personal branding (which apparently is something our European counterparts like to make fun of when discussing American social media). Why confuse the issue in the name of social media? Image by Vincent Teeuwen. Why is it that we as an industry wants brands to become people and people to become brands? This manifests itself with a corporate brand online talking like a human being, but without identifying the people behind the communications. It seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Apple is well-known for its veil of silence when it comes to secrecy and a virtual vacuum of participation when it comes to social media and blogging, with the occasional exception like senior vice president of product marketing Phil Schiller's Twitter account. [Social Media] Why You Won’t Like This Blog
It’s not just about social media, but how that fits into the bigger picture. I had a few emails (and 14 unsubscriptions) after this blog post I wrote yesterday. The emails I received expressed the sender’s dislike of the post, saying that if I didn’t have anything nice to say, I shouldn’t say anything at all. I’m guessing the unsubscribes shared that view. That’s fair enough. Opinion pieces often do that – some will agree, some will disagree, and some won’t care either way. There are sometimes cuss words. Cheers! image: waferbaby.

[Social Media] Chasing Engagement With Ads Is A Waste
As all this social stuff continues to accelerate in both adoption and advancement one would think that advertisers ought to examine their thinking.
