[Social Media] All Polls and Surveys Are Not Equal
This degradation in quality is indicative of a larger trend on the social web, the erosion of expertise (and professionalism) caused by social media content. Mind you, this erosion has not only impacted the new media content producer, but also the traditional journalism field as both our Microsoft and Google+ examples will show. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the browser IQ test was widely reported by the media, which did not verify the data. But now I was angry and pledged to deliver a SMBS (social media bitch slap) on the off-chance it occurred again. I’ve been in marketing communications since shortly after the earth cooled and I have seen a lot of poorly conceived advertising and marketing programs. But in today’s unstable market, I’m seeing some unstable marketing, too. For instance, about a month ago, I received a sort of desperate sounding note from a mortgage consultant that I didn’t know. So, even though he says he can reduce my monthly payment, why should I believe him? Guess what?

[Social Media] Why Facebook’s New Publishing Tool is a Threat to Twitter
Facebook is already the highest traffic-sending social media site out there, but those numbers are misleading. They are banking on major media outlets to pay them for more exposure. If they can take dollars from publishers, television, and other media outlets, it could hurt Twitter in their bread and butter business. [Social Media] Time Spent Is The New Impression
There have been some brands looking to transcend engagement as a metric in social media (they're not getting enough value out of it). These brands believe that they can be more transactional or direct response-driven in social media platforms. It's not a zero sum game, but it's also not something that many brands will be able to achieve, with the current flow of social media usage. Time spent isn't a new metric in media, but it's an interesting one in a media format that allows users to interact, share and create with media. Deeply.

Apple is well-known for its veil of silence when it comes to secrecy and a virtual vacuum of participation when it comes to social media and blogging, with the occasional exception like senior vice president of product marketing Phil Schiller's Twitter account. [Social Media] Is time-on-site a useful measure for online communities?
It is certainly true for social networks that there are significant benefits to be gained from increasing time-on-site. Perhaps not for the immediate benefits of greater engagement, but more because it is a sign of the increasingly important role that any particular social network is playing in a user’s life. We’ve written in the past how Facebook’s valuation is possibly related to a shift in our use of the internet to put social networks at the heart of a user’s experience.
