A customer goes on Yelp to leave a review, ends up writing a 5 star masterpiece longer than most Hemmingway novels, and Yelp filters it out. Not only is your business deprived of an awesome review – chances are that your formerly satisfied customer is a little ticked off, too. Filtered Yelp Reviews are Still Reviews.

It wasn’t too long ago that videos, images, author profiles, links to Google plus reviews, and maps weren’t all shown on the same screen. We’ve been able to see business reviews on Yelp, out of five stars, from Google’s search results for a few years, and we’ve already seen Google+ play a more serious role.

Here’s a review that someone left for a plumber in Redwood City : Her chief complaint is that she was not a customer, so is this still a legitimate review? There’s nothing about the subject in their content guidelines or terms of service, so I decided to flag the review to force a response out of them.

Again, Google has chosen to take the URLs out of the equation for the local stack, so we can rely more on their shadowy ranking algorithm and easily spoofed reviews, instead of our own intuition. Maybe some of them have eaten there before, remembered how good it was, and suddenly remembered to leave a review on their Yelp (joining the 916 people who went before them.) Some of those 140,000 people may actually be close enough to visit the place, or to at least check out their website and consider a visit.
