Without a doubt each one of these stores had a callout to “like them on Facebook,” or to “check-in on foursquare” or to “follow us on Twitter”. Twitter – minimal conversation and mostly push marketing. Now on the surface this is a great thing for social media as it is getting prominent exposure to the general public.

Do you need to own your community?

So to me, community can happen anywhere from a corner sandlot to a Facebook group or weekly Twitter chat or Subreddit on kittens. While there are inherent risks in building a community on a rented piece of grass (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), Humans are a curious species that will find places to connect. What say you?

The main reason being is that social media is mostly rented real estate. Yes you control the content on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc., – This is an interesting topic on David Spinks’ blog that has gained traction as of late. Is social media needed to have a community manager? I am of the mindset that it isn’t.
