Both versions of Google’s Pixel 3 handsets offer some of the best camera technology currently available. However, as is the case with all flagship products, it comes with a hefty price tag.

Now, according to perennial leaker @VenyaGeskin1, it seems the much-rumoured simplified Pixel 3 model will soon launch fitted with the same top-of-the-range camera as the current high-end models.

This ‘Pixel 3 Lite’ is expected to cost considerably less than previous Google smartphones, bringing the best mobile photography experience well within reach of those how can’t or won’t pay upwards of $800 for one of the flagships.

Of course, some sacrifices have to be made to meet the lower price point and these include a plastic body and a less powerful processing platform; Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670. The Snapdragon 670 features lower overall performance than the Snapdragon 845 found in the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, but does feature Qualcomm’s new Spectra 250 ISP architecture, designed specifically to bring advanced camera capabilities to the 600-series platform.

So while the new handset may feature the same hardware and software as the existing Pixel 3 flagships, performance will definitely be lower. It would be foolish, therefore, to assume that the Pixel 3 Lite will be able to deliver exactly the same camera experience as the existing flagships, especially when so much of Google’s photographic performance depends on powerful and speedy processing.

However, if the new Snapdragon 670 lives up to its promises, the Pixel 3 Lite camera is sure to be a very serious mid-range contender indeed.
