Recently, Google took the position that press releases were simply link schemes , advertorials for a business. Therefore, all links in press releases should have the nofollow attribute added to the links, so that the press release does not pass any SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) value to the website it’s linking to.

Use electronic and traditional PR techniques and optimized press releases. Create Wikipedia articles, electronic press releases; leave comments on forums and blogs even those with <nofollow> attributes. Create sub domains, blogs, media channels (.TV); TV); enlist popular bloggers to avoid Google Clustering.

In some cases like Yahoo, the links within syndicated content are nofollow (and they often point to Yahoo tracking URLs with 302 redirects) and thus do not pass SEO value. It can be done by redirecting the sponsored links to an intermediate page that is blocked via robots.txt, or by applying the nofollow attribute to the JavaScript links (see the Vanessa Fox writeup as well as the second half of this article in SEL for more detail). PageRank Sculpting – A few SEOs taught a couple of years ago that you could increase your link popularity to your best pages by adding a nofollow attribute to links pointing to your terms of service and privacy policy pages. It doesn’t. Don’t count on it, especially if your website has only 10 pages.

Li comes down a bit hard on PR agencies; true, most of them are ham-handed when it comes to social media, mass-blasting out press releases to bloggers (Li offers an excellent guide to conducting blogger outreach the right way in chapter 11) and generally treating social media like a broadcast channel.
