Though it’s dangerous to assume anything about leadership in the social networking space (Facebook overtook MySpace as the biggest social network less than a decade ago , after all), the landscape does seem to have matured and stabilized somewhat at this point. Social media connections are those I know through a variety of online forums, the blogosphere, Twitter, and the like (but I generally don’t befriend someone immediately; I still give it time). The Irony: MySpace Okay, so in my previous paragraph, I mention that you should be an early adopter of social networks.

UK Twitter statistics: Twitter has shown explosive growth this year, with the number of reported users more than doubling from 12 million to 26 million. Tumblr is another platform to watch, with major growth during 2011 and Nielson’s third quarter report putting it at #2 in the UK by page views. The losers.

Although there are many social networks to choose from, almost everyone is either on Twitter , or Facebook (once upon a time that would have been Myspace , but that time has come and gone), while the more tech savvy are on niche social sharing sites like Instagram , and Tumblr.

All to often a business will focus on one or two social media platforms, particularly Facebook and Twitter since they receive the most mentions. If you are trying to target young music fans, then Myspace may be a better option. Don’t simply look at the traditional big named social media platforms either.
