So the question is–are there things that today’s B2B marketers can learn from history, specifically, the tremendous success of Facebook and the rise, fall and possible resurrection of Myspace? From its founding, Myspace took off like a rocket ship while Facebook had a much slower ascension from launch. My answer is certainly–yes!

When I started Ignite Social Media in 2007, the battle between MySpace and Facebook still raged and Friendster was hanging on for dear life. Near the end of 2020, a Chinese startup leaked 400 GB of scraped data from Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. For years, new networks like Plurk, Jaiku, Google Wave and others came and went.

That might be realistic for startups and small companies, but no way would you find the CEO of Adobe in the company’s booth. MySpace Is Where the Young People Hang Out. Of course the demographic at MySpace, and on every network, continues to shift, and is interpreted differently from study to study. That was three years ago!
