Mobile devices have changed how we consume and create porn, and the data solidly backs that up.
With its year end stats report (SFW), xHamster is highlighting all the standard stuff; most popular celebrities, most popular categories, popular searches and top countries by visit. But the thing we should be keyed in on is how much time we're spending on porn sites using our mobile devices.
Over two-thirds of site traffic (71.49%, up 12% YOY) on xHamster came from mobile devices. It doesn't matter if it came from Apple iOS or Google Android, the point is that we no longer restrict our porn consumption to dark, moldy basements. Porn is in our pockets wherever we go, whenever, allowing us both the ability to download and watch it or film it and upload it.
The commentary on the xHamster report mentions this shift in how we consume porn. With the camera technology easily outperforming early porn production quality, it allows both professional performers and amateur users to quickly shoot, edit and upload videos. So not only are we consuming more porn on our mobile devices, but we are using those same devices to create it.
This creates not only more content, but more authentic content that closer represents the diversity found in our daily lives.
"Viewers want authenticity," Alex Hawkins, Vice President of xHamster tells me. "Ten years ago, global porn looked relatively monolithic, but as tens of thousands of performers and independent producers have come online, they've built up an ever more diverse user base. Porn detractors have long said that the industry promotes unrealistic body types and sexual practices. But in 2019, as in nearly every recent year, the number of people producing and the communities of people being represented has grown."

While porn is still generally vilified in the mainstream, the rise of smartphones tells a much different story. As much as we've accepted anything else on our mobile devices, we've accepted porn. And when something becomes so widely accessed by the masses, it's hard to put any kind of stop to it. Everything in moderation kids.
This trend in how we create and consume porn will hopefully help society finally start treating sex workers with some damn respect. Editing porn on a phone is no simple task.
As it stands now, and as xHamster points out, there is a lot of porn being created and consumed every single minute of the day. And most of it is being done on our phones. So no matter how you feel about the porn industry, smartphones have only cemented it as a very active and integral part of this new, technological society tied to our mobile devices.
