There are incredible tools and services at your disposal, most of which don’t cost a dime. I won’t dive into the tactics of how to use these tools in this post, but below I reference the ways any person or business can build a community on a limited budget. But that doesn’t mean you can’t build yourself a thriving community.

How can social media plug in to those metrics? Do I have the necessary tools & resources in place to ensure we can be successful? For measurement you can’t go wrong with starting with something like Simply Measured , Sprout Social or Raven Tools. So you have your goals determined and a good tool set in place.

FROST has been able to drive significant buzz, awareness and business using tools that cost nothing but time thus far. I will be interested in actual metrics of conversion ratios, impact on sales etc. However there are very few who are actually taking full advantage of those opportunities.

But really, it falls on those that really want to make a career out of social media marketing through learning the craft, and getting familiar with as many tools as possible. I’ve found getting familiar with reporting tools such as Radian 6 and Social Radar a good start. However those can be expensive tools to get access to.

It also allows you to control the platform, and metrics making it easier to turn those conversations and data into actionable resources. While it’s great and necessary to use the external channels, it’s important to establish yourself as a true community champion by having your own community presence.
