Klout just keeps getting better. I recently noticed that the service has added several other social media services to its metrics, which increases its value a hundred-fold (though I’d still say it’s overly weighted toward Twitter). In all, Klout is now measuring your influence across ten different social networks.

Klout bills itself as a social media influence metric, but until now it was largely limited in how it measured influence. Recently – like, within the last month – they’ve expanded how to measure influence to include Wikipedia entries, LinkedIn titles, and +K. I actually rather like this idea. But that’s just me.

I don’t care how long you have been on Twitter. And I sure as heck don’t care what your Klout score is. I unfollowed you on Twitter! Do you think that announcing it on your Twitter feed is going to shame me back into following you again? That’s not how Twitter works. Whether you are interesting.

Like a lot of people, I’m registered on both Klout and Peerindex , which both attempt to track my online influence in slightly different ways to give one overall score which can be compared to others in my areas of interest. So are you on Klout, Peerindex and Empire Avenue? Measuring influence or just tracking loyalty?

When monitoring social media, don’t forget to monitor social media platforms (changes at Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn etc) as well as stuff specific to YOUR industry. For my students: RSS allows you to manually (or autopost) Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn etc updates from a 3rd party site.
