The tool that’s making the most rounds these days, it seems to me, is Klout. There have been blog posts ad nauseam by online influencers (and I don’t mean to use that term in a belittling way, so please don’t anyone take it that way) on online tools such as Klout. Now, I have no axe to grind with Klout.

Klout, the site that gave us our social media Klout scores, is shutting down on May 25, 2018. At the height of Klout’s reign in social media, social media influencers, with a high enough Klout score, could get rewarded by advertisers. Klout Perks was shut down in 2015.

A few weeks ago I noticed that Klout had added the WordPress button to the available channels to connect to which was encouraging. But to not include and factor self hosted blogs is a serious miss on Klout’s part. Apparently not based on this support thread on Klout’s own site. But not so fast.

So I went on a blog hiatus for a few weeks, and it certainly made a significant impact on my Klout score. I certainly don’t lose any sleep over my Klout score. Many businesses are using Klout as a measuring stick for influence and not just for their perks program. I’m not entirely sure what I think about that.

Klout bills itself as a social media influence metric, but until now it was largely limited in how it measured influence. Moments is something like the Facebook Timeline, but it takes “your most important content” from all of the networks Klout measures and adds it to your profile. I actually rather like this idea.

The most recent example was from B2B social media thinker Paul Gillin who wrote a post unveiling the flaws in Klout’s ranking scheme. Instead, they object to the very notion and existence of Klout.

I work in social media, and my Klout score has absolutely ZERO influence on the clients I work with, obtain, or my career path quite frankly. In fact 90% of those I work with don’t even know what a Klout score is.
