Recently, Google took the position that press releases were simply link schemes , advertorials for a business. Therefore, all links in press releases should have the nofollow attribute added to the links, so that the press release does not pass any SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) value to the website it’s linking to.

It is one of the many reasons that content marketing has become so popular, as brands in other industries put an emphasis on content development and promotion and essentially become publishers themselves. I’ve written about content filtering and keeping up with industry news in previous post. Send out press releases. Industry events and seminars are great places to meet people besides getting cutting edge information, of course. They have to be news-worthy. At least warm up first and avoid cold calling.

Nofollow links also matter. Some links, for example, the ones from blog comments may have the rel=”nofollow” attribute. <a <a rel=”nofollow” href=” [link] “>Example of nofollow link</a> Any paid links must have the rel=”nofollow” attribute to comply with Google’s guidelines.

The top results for most keyphrases are either a Wikipedia page, a site that is very focused around community, or a clear leader in an industry. Based on this, I knew it was going to be a challenge to rank for two competitive keyphrases in my industry when I was a total nobody. SEO now is far less robotic, and far more social.

PR people aren’t in the ad sales industry. Their goal is to send press pitches, not to buy ads on your site.
