I have really cut back recently and really only participate actively in five social networks, below are the five and my reasons for sticking to them. While I am no longer as active as I was in the past in Twitter chats, the network is really one where great relationships can be made. Foursquare – I love this network.

So to me, community can happen anywhere from a corner sandlot to a Facebook group or weekly Twitter chat or Subreddit on kittens. or updates from professional groups and companies that I love (Under Armour, Samuel Adams and Jimmy Fund) in my feed. Facebook is the world’s largest social network. For me, it is relevance – I would rather see a former coworker in Baltimore or Long Island who has a real life update (wedding, kids, coming out, etc.)

In case you haven’t heard, Google has launched a new network for its users, Google+. Both of these groups are wrong. Sure Google+ has some social components, but it is far from a social network, rather it’s a means to make search smarter. Some are calling it a Facebook killer , while others are calling it dead.
