Social monitoring tools like Radian6 and PR suites like Vocus and Cision offer the greatest range of functionality for research and contact management. Followerwonk from SEOmoz is a great tool for researching Twitter users. Or search specific domains, brands and topics for more extensive research. Followerwonk. Klout and Kred.

Today Kim Wilson and I are leading a social media workshop for a group of local TV and radio stations. For more see Kim’s Lost Remote post on what local TV newsrooms are pinning which gave me a great start to my research. While Pinterest is a natural fit for lifestyle publishers there are good opportunities for broadcast media too.

They are indeed #2 in terms of total fans (among the group of news sites that I looked at). I do feel compelled to mention that NPR would be #2 on your list in terms of fans, however (disclosure: I work there as an audience research analyst). Mike, I should have included MSNBC in the original group. Interesting numbers.

It’s not the same 20 every time – Twitter randomly shuffles in 20 profiles from the group it has deemed worthy of recommendation. Since new users aren’t always sure exactly how to use Twitter, this starter group can be quite helpful, so the profiles that are featured do end up getting a steady stream of new followers.

I started with the group I used in my news sites domain authority post and added a few more. News moved it to the top of the group for articles and knocked Guardian.co.uk To get a basic idea I ran Page Speed , the open source Firefox/Firebug add-on that Google recommends, on the home page of 25 news sites. UPDATE: Adding Yahoo!

Email is by far still the preferred tool for online communication and content sharing in her age group, but social media is beginning to make inroads. From what I’ve observed she doesn’t necessarily know she’s doing half the time (sorry Mom!), but her and her friends seem to be sticking with it. Let’s see what they make of Google Wave.

It would also be interesting to see how Microsoft addresses the financial realities of trying to extend such an arrangement to a larger group of publishers. I’d actually like to see this happen…it would make for an interesting case study demonstrating that the only one hurt by such a deal is News Corp itself.
