Use an open source microblogging service like Yammer or QikCom. If your organization already uses Instant Messaging, microblogging offers the potential to turn those one-on-one conversations into group collaboration. Think of it like an IM platform where every IM you send is open to everyone else in the network.

Asking this group of users to go from this to using a wiki was a gigantic step that they weren’t ready to take. Before rolling out ANY type of social media application, whether it’s blogs, or a wiki, or microblogging, make sure that you do an assessment of your user culture first. They need to first learn how to walk.

It’s not enough to be insular and focus on your groups of friends. At business networking events, try to get to know people outside your group of trusted colleagues. We may be slightly different versions of ourself when with each of these different groups. I created an additional account for people in that group.

Use categories YouTube uses categories to group videos into broad topics, like “Sports” or “Technology”. That said, our experts did note that embedding YouTube videos in microblogs (like Twitter or Tumblr) can also have a positive SEO impact. Of course, this assumes you already have an active blog.)

This is the kind of content that spreads beyond the typical blog reader to an entirely different group of people. If you open a newspaper and take a look, even within the Sports section, their’s specific writers who consistently tackle specific topics. They rarely have one writer covering the details of every local sports team.
