Twitter & Politics: A 2012 Recap

Obama's Golden Tweet: Most Retweets in HistoryOn Tuesday, Twitter released a recap of the past year — 2012: Year on Twitter. It was a big year for Twitter and politics, particularly in the US.  Here are some of the highlights:

The ‘Golden’ Tweet – Just before affirming his re-election in person, President Obama simply tweeted “Four More Years,” with a picture of him embracing Michelle Obama.  The tweet garnered not only the most retweets in 2012, but the most retweets in history (over 817,000, as reported by the Washington Post.)

Political Events – produced a big response on Twitter, with the first debate seeing over 10 million tweets. Over 31+ million tweets were sent about the election on Election Day, peaking at 327,452 tweets per minute on election night as the results were coming in.

Hashtags – Twitter compiled the year’s top 10 political hashtags.
