A lot happened this month in social media with most of the news centered around the Facebook privacy scandal. What we learned from that experience is that many people in Congress do not understand how social networks work and that Facebook has a lot of action items to follow up on. Facebook Faced Congress.

As Digg becomes more of a social network and less of a social news network (or a hybrid that incorporates both elements), it has a lot of obstacles it needs to face. Besides major usability issues , duplicate stories submissions , and ads that literally scream at you , Digg has yet another issue to deal with: privacy.

Controversy around Facebook’s privacy data consumed the news in April but in May, new features and announcements brought less cloudy news and more updates to look out for. Like: Facebook’s new rating system. Social Media Today reported that Facebook will be testing a new rating system for brand pages.

Yet we tolerate exactly that type of behavior from leading search and social media sites every day, and even reward them with growing traffic and more of our precious time. A potential Google killer , Facebook killer or even Twitter killer may not do it with superior technology, but simply with a better user experience. And listens.

Just because my work includes strong involvement with social media doesn’t mean that I need to let everyone into my personal life… or for that matter… open my privacy so you can see all my posts. Google doesn’t forget! Facebook is a social network and its intended purpose is online networking.
