2011 was the year when Page took over as CEO at Google. In the middle of the year, Google then tried again, again, again to launch a social network that led to the birth of Google+. I won’t go into whether Google+ is a success or even a big competitor to Facebook as a social network; it’s not the point for Google+.

Tweet Microsoft just launched their social media rival to the established social media platforms Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Pinterest. You can also follow people as on Twitter and like posts as on Facebook (with a smile instead of a thumb) with a layout similar to Google+. The network is called So.cl Same but different.

As with other successful tech stories, like Facebook, Google and Microsoft, the creation of the site came to life from a basic need as consumer and from when the site was launched, it was quickly turned into a big hit by simple word-of-mouth.
