Why I’m kinda over Yelp: Foursquare and Twitter are my recommendation engines of choice

While there’s still a place for Yelp in my heart, I’ve found lately that I much prefer using Twitter and Foursquare to find new places and things to do here in Boston. Twitter is also a great recommendation engine, though not necessarily what it was designed for. Sorry, Yelp: I’m kinda over you. I’ve moved up, moved on.

You also see many folks on Twitter and Facebook sharing their latest posts over and over as it’s a way to bring more people to seeing what they are doing. One downside to oversharing is that communities like Twitter seem to self police themselves. It is definitely scary. It has more pop-ups than VH1’s Pop-Up Video.

Why should I like your brand?

Without a doubt each one of these stores had a callout to “like them on Facebook,” or to “check-in on foursquare” or to “follow us on Twitter”. Foursquare – no deal, despite a call out to check in. Twitter – minimal conversation and mostly push marketing. If you guessed yes, you were incorrect.

Going in to the conference, I was expecting big things from Gowalla and SCVNGR, unfortunately for them foursquare 3.0 was launched a few days before the conference.

The Klout Score uses data from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Foursquare in order to. TweetLevel, also launched in 2009, is a Twitter measurement tool created by Edelman. By putting your Twitter handle into the page, it determines how influential and popular I am. score, I am a “Twitter Superstar.”
