Facebook’s the crack and we’re all greedy junkies

A recent Facebook update changed how brands are able to get content onto users’ news feeds. For me, it is relevance – I would rather see a former coworker in Baltimore or Long Island who has a real life update (wedding, kids, coming out, etc.) What I hate, and I am sure you will agree, are the cheap jump on the bandwagon or meme posts.

Has your social ego taken over?

At every turn on social we’re being scored on how influential we are, showing off how many fans/followers we have or showcasing how many people read our blogs or have us in their Circles. Focusing on these numbers makes it easy to fall into the trap of feeding the ego. The most common of these is inflating one’s self-worth.

It is also a worthwhile follow given the security breaches that come out via social networking sites. The Animal Rescue Site – While I still don’t remember liking this page, they show up in my feed at least 5X a day. I have 16 mutual friends liking the page, but where they win is sharing helpful stories for pet owners as well as adoption stories.

Stop spreading yourself thin

In participating in this type of “yes” mentality we inherently, often willingly, spread ourselves too thin – sucking out productivity. To be successful or get out of the vicious minutia cycle we have to stop feeding into the yes mentality however hard it is to say no. So how do we collectively avoid being spread paper thin?
