Some of the biggest news in the blogging world over the last week was without a doubt Google’s announcement that on June 1st, they’re closing Google Reader. Paraphrasing their own words, the usage of Reader is smaller than ever, and Google want to focus on fewer products. Google are going a terrible job of it.

Of course this only really works if you use Feedburner (which many bloggers do), but my blog subscribers skyrocketed once I started using FriendFeed. Subscriber Stats I really don’t know if I should continue reporting on Feedburner as the count is just far too erratic. But with Feedburner, who knows. Sorry to hear about the whole feedburner thing, I think we are all kind of feeling that it is just way unreliable. You could say that we prefer signal over noise.

Last week I tweeted that I’d not checked my Google Reader account in a month. RSS does continue to drive traffic (at least, my Feedburner stats seem to indicate that) but as I look at my own statistics to see where people are arriving on my sites from, the percentage of those coming from RSS/Feedburner seems to be on the decline.

Blogger is 100% free, and has close to 100% uptime thanks to Google's incredible infrastructure. Google handles all that for you and they're pros at it. Wordpress has plugins, but Google uses the standardized OpenSocial API , along with Google Gadgets , to provide an interface to Widgets and other features within the blog.

You need to provide access to your list’s current home – mine was at Feedburner so I had to provide my Google email/password. A lot of people use it just for their newsletter so they keep a separate email option for blog post updates – usually Feedburner or Feedblitz. I find this very wise on their part.
