Well, the RSS apocolypse is upon us thanks to Google’s planned sunsetting of Reader. Now that my Reader has been scheduled for termination , expect a pivot. Of course the sunsetting of Reader disrupts my and many other bloggers’ daily link sharing on Twitter and Google Plus, which causes change. Since xPotomac and SxSW have passed creating more time, I plan on starting anew , and rebuilding on Feedly and Flipboard with new voices on a wider range of topics. So after a full weekend of removing feeds that hadn’t updated in a year, I began to slowly collect feeds from new bloggers I have connected with since the last time I did a full sweep of my RSS subscriptions. The debate lies with the fact that more and more people are starting to use Twitter, Twitter lists, Facebook, and other social means to just get the news from the streams they follow on these sites rather than typical RSS Readers like Google Reader. With most RSS feeds providing the entire contents of a blog post, for many people, the RSS reader is not just the place where news is discovered, but also where it is consumed. This means that if one's RSS subscribers triple, downstream traffic may not increase at a similar rate, as even if readers enjoy one's content, it is likely that many don't click through to the original story.
