My own monitoring of my niches generally happens in two ways: Subscribing to Feeds of Key Sources of Information – these days most sites have some way of subscribing to them, usually via an RSS feed. I have a folder in my feed reader for each of my main topics which contains a number of key blogs and news sites in that niche.

Once you have created a few lists (or found good ones to follow on sites like Listorious , you can login to Twitter and go straight to your lists, or setup your TweetDeck , HootSuite , or other Twitter applications to show you the people you are following on those lists. Unsubscribe from feeds that you recognize you are not benefiting from.

Since many of you probably use a third-party application like TweetDeck or Seesmic , you may not log into the Twitter homepage that often anymore. You can see how many people are subscribing to your RSS feed and from which sources, and if you use the new Google Analytics integration, you can see how many clicks each individual post is getting from feed readers. Around two years ago I had over 350 feeds in there as I was a total information junkie.
