I recently came across a question in Linkedin about the etiquette of retweets. The person ask if s/he should send a public thanks, send a private direct message, or simply do nothing. It’s actually a good question to ask and it illustrates the concept that there are social rules that influence how people use social media. My own response is that a person should just send a direct message. don’t think thanking people publicly really engages them beyond the thanks. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY AUGUST 18, 2010 How to fit Relationships into social media policies Since social media is ideally about creating and cultivating relationships with other people, a social media policy needs to consider those relationships and respect them while also making it clear to employees that they also have a relationship with the company. Tip 2: When you get comments, respond to them. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY AUGUST 11, 2010 Why I will drop you as a connection on Linkedin ended up choosing to unconnect from the person, because while I might have appreciated the chance to win something, what I didn’t appreciate was the feeling that I was being advertised to. At one time, I used the Event feature on Linkedin and invited people in my network to events, until people emailed me and asked me to stop spamming them. want relationships. Thank you for the article. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY SEPTEMBER 8, 2010 5 tips to manage your time on social media Not surprisingly this is a challenge faced by most, if not all, small business owners. In many cases, the small business owner is alone and has to do everything, which means that adding social media on top of an already busy mix like adding that last piece of straw that will break the camel’s back. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Social media can be very distracting. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY JANUARY 31, 2011 What’s the real value of a like? At the same time, the metrics for a like (on Facebook) increase the possibility that your comment will show up in the top news feed as opposed to more recent news. On Linkedin, this question was recently asked and as I got to thinking about what a like indicates on a social networking site, I realized there were pros and cons to the like button. The like button creates an illusion of engagement and interaction, while also providing the person who has done the liking a “feel good emotion because the person pushed a button and liked something.
