One of the things I quickly found out didn’t work when trying to grow a blog was to use it purely as a broadcast tool. I picked up the story on my own blog (linking to the first) and then my post got picked up by a massive blog which drew in a lot of new readers. The same is true (in most cases) when it comes to blogging.

Twitter as a tool to communicate during conferences. After attending SMX (I’ll post something on that soon) and SES NY, I realized that Twitter is a useful tool for conferencegoers to communicate their whereabouts or to share breaking news and announcements. A few weeks ago, jwz posted a great piece on how to access Facebook via a feed reader. I now have status updates in my feed, and finally, I can see both happy and sad news. Linkedin is not an open networking tool and casual use of it devalues the system and your network within it. Interesting observation.

If you can afford it, buy professional listening tools, like Radian6 or others in that category. Use Google Reader to store your ego searches. Use heat map tools like CrazyEgg to see how people relate to your site. Get a Gmail.com account for use with reader, calendar, docs, and more. Be sure to stay aware of those.
