Some friends and I took the new Facebook Groups for a test-drive to find out. New Groups. After I had finished writing several hundred words about the pros and cons of the new group functionality and interface, I sat back and realized there was one big con staring at me. Seems reasonable enough. So, here’s the thing.

OK, maybe that isn’t the best example, especially for college students, but you know what I mean.) Reply Barbara Saunders says: May 7, 2009 at 9:01 am There are many alumni groups on LinkedIn. I’m sure many older people have joined those groups and not bothered to sign up for the school’s alumni Web site.

This can range from posting photos on Facebook from an offline event to holding live events online allowing a large group the opportunity to interact in real-time, and everything in between. At speaking engagements, I often use driving as an example. They might even be heavy Facebook users.

If you’re part of the second group, I strongly encourage you to consider using Google Alerts. Google has a simple guide to walk you through the steps , along with some helpful examples. Don’t be the last to know! Is it really that easy to set up Google Alerts? In a word – Yes.

Again, an example of marketing at its finest – create interest up front and then blow their socks off by delivering beyond expectations. When I coached others, I often used myself as an example. Creating that safe environment where the only agenda is helping each other, thereby gaining more for yourself than could be imagined, is one of the key concepts behind the groups I lead. It was new to me; this was all new to me. I pushed myself. I was frustrated.
