It’s tempting, when you see what widgets are available for your blog, to add tons of them to your sidebar. More often than not, what this does is create a pleasant looking blog in only one format (usually web), and a mess of color and cubes in a reader or mobile format. There’s also the matter of RSS Feed Readers.

What you want to do is take your keywords, do some searches, and then get the RSS feed of that search sent to your Google Reader or feed reader of your choice. If you’re not using an RSS reader use Google’s, it will make your life easier. If you do, please put them in the comments.

Is there an example, a case study? The easiest thing to do is to setup your keywords to be delivered via RSS to the feed reader of your choice (google reader, bloglines, etc). Are we supposed to follow everyone who is tweeting something about bird feeders (or whatever key word we're targeting)? How effective is that?

Feed readers are used to read your content. People use search engines, feed readers, and social media because they provide functionality missing from most websites. I use this plugin to enable voting at Angry-Birds.net (see any post for example). Think about it: Search engines are used to find your content.

For example, on Twitter you can post many times throughout the day, however, on Facebook people want quality versus quantity. You can add widgets to your blog’s sidebar to display real-time posts from some of your other sites. This does not mean to bombard your audience with self-promoting, keyword stuffed posts.
