I liked that it had the ability to search through feeds to find specific content. I like that my online communities help surface the content that is most relevant to me and it seems to keep me up to date with news and events. My pages feed is largely populated by updates from media outlets, clients and other brands.

With the introduction of a new features for use on pages, events and groups we are all going to see a lot more stories in our Facebook feeds including Stories posted to Instagram and Messenger. Stories are popular on Instagram and Snapchat, but haven’t really caught on for Facebook until now.

This week, Facebook announced rolled out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions pe ople are having about public events, people and topics. In addition, users can create updates directly from a hashtag feed to insert themselves directly into any open discussions. Hashtags are the first step.

But, the new followers are often not even aware they’ve followed which limits the opportunity to get into their feeds. Did people attend the event? In addition, there are cheap ways to automate Instagram activity such as liking posts and following others. These build a following quickly. So where’s the influence?

To keep abreast of events as they happened, I spent that day with one eye out the window and the other on my Twitter feed. The Ottawa War Memorial shooting happened just around the corner from my office but I found out about from Twitter first. Twitter is central to most of the client work I do.
