Two weeks ago, I received a Klout Perk to be part of the Social 46, a gathering of Indiana’s top social media influencers. According to the Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee , Klout was used to help identify the participants, and the list was augmented manually with known local bloggers, gadflies, and connectors.

Does anyone else think its interesting that Twitter, the hottest social media network today, is generating events? Ah, events. Prediction: tomorrow’s event, event marketing and sponsorship opportunity is with “Tweet-ups” where like-minded Twitter-peeps meet up to meet each other in person. Everyone is doing it.

Someone’s Klout score is not necessarily reflective of that person’s “real&# (i.e. online + offline) influence (though, to be fair to Klout, they don’t claim that is so). To me, thats where all this hype around influence and Klout and the like fall short, because theyre not taking that into consideration.

For those who track this sort of thing, I’ve noticed that in some cases using a curation service can increase the Klout Score. Y0u can also add keywords from Facebook or specific hashtags to your Paper.li. I find Storify works best with specific hashtags and is a fantastic way to curate conversation surrounding an event.

From whitepapers to webinars, from eBooks to events, if it is happening, it will show up on social media. As I start to see a collection of tweets that mention the same event/post/activity, I’ll jot down a note. Attend Industry Events and Work It. Note the use of the #marketingunited hashtag by Ann Handley.
