Some early insight into Facebook Reactions, a look into how engagement differs on Facebook and Twitter, and an interesting insight into users on Pinterest.  All this in this week’s Social You Should Know.

The Reaction to Facebook Reactions

The global launch of Facebook Reactions in February of this year finally gave users more options than just liking, commenting, or sharing a post. Now there is full range of emotions to consider including Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry (still no “Dislike” button). But a recent study from Quintly shows that only a fraction of users are taking the opportunity to express themselves using these new emoticons. The analysis of 130,000 posts showed that the newly introduced reactions make up less than 3% of all user interactions. With 76% of all actions taken, “Likes” still rule as the predominant feeling expressed. The study also concludes that video content receives 40% more Reactions than image posts. I “Love” this insight.

Engagement Differs on Facebook and Twitter

This is newsworthy. According to research from the Pew Research Center, Facebook and Twitter users engage differently with news content. While Facebook is the top referrer to news sites, the study reports that readers coming from Twitter are more engaged with the content. This is based on metrics from 30 news sites and applies to both short and long news articles.

Celebrating Good Times

That’s what folks who pin and repin are doing according to Pinterest where users are 2x more likely to celebrate events and holidays. When to catch them? Pinners are planning for the holiday they’re celebrating at least 60 days out (21% higher than average) and they go on to pin at an increasing rate up until the actual event. Showing that social, and Pinterest in particular, play a critical role in the purchase journey including the initial stages such as awareness and discovery. Pinteresting as usual.
